When I started, I couldn’t have imagined we would cover as much ground as we have. Some of the kind words many of you have taken the time to share has provided some well-timed encouragement to get me to the next letter. And for that and your financial support, I am grateful.
One of the goals of this was to work with my community to help contribute to a creative life at the precise time when professional demands require an excess of sweat equity with little promise of pay. And the gamble has paid off. I have been blessed with an actual assignment, a paid gig, that is requiring more of my time lately as my partner and I chip away at the story to build it true.
I wanted to take a second and share with you about shifting priorities. I will keep writing newsletters, but may, at times, be releasing three rather than four a month. If I do, it is simply because I am engaged in all the efforts you have helped create.
And what efforts are those?
In the past few months, I’ve begun work on my first no budget feature; a punk rock Iphone movie where I took one of my plays and have been translating it to film, then shooting it with trusted colleagues on off days. It has been profoundly healing and empowering as I awaken dormant muscles and test my ability to direct again. If I’m not editing that, I’ve been doing rewrites on a play that is getting read in Los Angeles at the end the month, or teaching my classes and consults.
As I suspect many of you subscribe to support all of these endeavors, I wanted to thank you in advance for your understanding as I slow down my delivery pace for the next two months. When the time is right I’ll share more about what I have been working on. In the meantime, I promise to keep dropping at least three newsletters a month, but I’ve learned recently that just because I work for myself, doesn’t mean I can’t give myself time off, just to make sure the axe stays sharp.
I value you, your support, and your time and wouldn’t be in the flow I am without what we began together. Stay tuned, you may get an advanced look at part of the film!! See ya soon. And for those of you who have been loyal free subscribers, I would love to invite you to share your favorite newseltter with one friend or become a paid subscriber today. Either of those efforts help this little thing grow and help me devote more to my creative practice, teach at affordable rates, and generate work for my community.
Chekhov and his human thank you!
Thanks for all that you do Matt!! Your quality of work speaks for you in a good way and cannot wait to see what's in store next!
